"Without a strong core, strong arms and legs cannot apply their power on the playing field."

THE IMPORTANCE OF CORE STRENGTH AND STABILITY IN ATHLETES

Many athletes are misinformed on not only how to train the core properly, but just exactly where the core is and what function it has in creating speed, power, and agility.

First, let's look at exactly what is meant by the term "core". Core, as the word, means a center and/or foundational part. Everyone knows that a strong foundation is crucial in building anything with strength and longevity, from the field of construction to the institution of marriage, a strong foundation is crucial for success. The same holds true in building a fast, explosive and powerful body.

Athletes and weekend warriors alike believe that the core is solely made up of the rectus abdominus. This is very far from the truth and a huge reason why most athletes don't perform to their full potential. The core or "pillar" is comprised of many muscles - muscles that surround and support the hips and the spine, and the muscles in the abdomen that facilitate flexion, rotation, extension, and stability.

Having a strong core will improve your speed, power, and agility.

All movement is initiated with the core musculature. The deep (local) abdominals are recruited first to help stabilize the spine and make subsequent movements with your limbs more efficient - no wasted energy. Your core is also the power center from which forces from the ground or other fixed points of leverage travel up and down the body. Without a strong core, strong arms and legs cannot apply their power on the playing field.
